Ableton Live 9 – Coming Soon?
It’s just a few days out from the 2011 NAMM show, and there’s talk that it may bring the announcement of Ableton Live 9. It’s been almost 2 years since the last major release, giving some substance to the rumor – so, what features might Live 9 bring?
According to the official rumor, Live 9 will include:
- 64-bit support
- New effects
- Soundcloud integration
- A new synth
(source: www.synthtopia.com)
All of these features seem pretty believable – 64 bit support is pretty likely, as are some new effects. A new synth and Soundcloud integration aren’t so definite, but would certainly be well received features.
What about the not-so-official rumors? Here’s a few:
- Stability improvements
- Built in Max for Live
- Dual monitor support
- Track comping
Very soon, we’ll find out if NAMM 2011 really does mean a new version of Live. What new features would you like to see?

I’m lookin forward to a new release, like a child does christmas. My wish is to be able to view te arage and launch view simultaniously.
Grts

That max for live integrate live 9
;-)
OSC Support!!! Please please please
dual monitor support PLEASE!
Totally agree – session view + arrange view at the same time would be a massive plus!
Seeing as it wasn’t announced at NAMM, I guess it’ll be a while before we find out though…
Agreed, the ability to open two windows , one for arrangement and one for session would streamline my workflow dramatically. Especially coming from a Cubase/Logic background, I like to see my linear arrangement but have the flexibility and additional controls of the session view. This would be a nice way to use two monitors.
oh… and export to MP3 PLEASE!!!
(yes, I know WAV/AIFF is better but its impractical when wanting to instantly send a rough take to my MP3 player or send a file to a friend. I currently have a LAME shortcut setup so I can just rightclick a WAV file and convert, but I’m lazy and that is one more step I have to deal with. Plus, it’s nice to be able to add my ID3 tags at the same time. I have to open the file with iTunes to add the info, which is again time consuming)
ya .wav is getting old for me… I like to analyze my rough projects in the car. Sometimes I just bring my laptop and play it from the project file itself… it’s bad though bc I find myself editing at stoplights :/
I hope 9 includes a better series of tools and options so I can manipulate and curve envelopes smoothly like Logic and Protools. I really dislike making slopes with dots all over them. Anyway around this until 9 comes out, without running logic rewire?
Go to the automation menu on the channel click where it says mixer and select fades from the drop down menus. Live already has the smooth fades. :) hope it helps
better piano roll for composing please :(
agree :)
Yeah!! Better Piano Roll!!!
64 Bit PLEASE.

the ability to open two windows , one for arrangement and one for session would streamline my workflow dramatically
i don’t care what features they add to it as long as they fix the stability issue and enable TIMESTRETCHING WITHIN DRUM RACK PADS
Yes time stretching within drum racks and simpler would be so good. Also transposing without altering speed in simpler would be prime.
A “Crop Gate” option.
I’m talking about a gate that crops/slices everything under the selected threshold!
‘Add silence’ & ‘match volumes’ options would be really cool too!
Add silence is already available in live 8.
CMD+I or CTRL+I
Surround support ofcourse
Also the dual screen option would be a really good improvement as well as the 64-bit support
I understand running vst’s in rewire slave mode is a programming hassle, but if ableton dosn’t fix this I will not be upgrading.
Hi,
I wish me
- a fx device how Stutter (Izotope)
- the instrumenr rack surface show the parameter of a playing Instrument in a chain (Robert Henke monodeck)
- track groups can open to left or right
-instrument racks with 8 buttons mear the poti
-tracks can be disappear
-.fader with limit to 0 dB not not 6
-kapture function in the GUI (Kapture Richi Hawtin max for live device)
mfg
S:R.
Fader is okay with limit to 6. If you wanna limit when you’re using your controller please go to the mapping section and in max value put the one you want.
XML files!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Id like it to be a free update seeing as they have already run me for 800 bucks.
How about a functional file browser when searching for files?
A library manager would be nice.
Proper audio editing please
Put the grid off and you have propper audio editing. Cut with Shift and is the same you have in audio editor. Dig Live functions very deep before say something.
Deffinitelly they must add not the dual monitor support but an integration like logic. WE WANT FULL SCALE WINDOWS WITH ALL THE AREAS. SESSION, ARRANGEMENT, PIANO ROLL, TRANSPORT, MIXER. PLEASE…. I DONT WANT TO USE LOGIC AGAIN.
i’m not sure how you mean this.
this doesn’t work for me.
I think he meant something like to be able to cut and paste parts of a sample or normalize like in the sample editor in logic or audition, wavelab…
Dual monitor Support +1
Better Browser with ID3 tag support
I like the dual monitor idea, but very impractical for live performance.
I would have to say the ability to tear off panels and be able to customize my work space would be very handy.
Also a good file management system for tracking and cataloging my music files. I.E Be able to show comments. ID3 tags, BPM Etc. I am so sick and tired of using Itunes for this.
I would like to see the drum racks have REAL TIME PITCH SHIFTING & TIME STRETCHING like the patch phrase function in the Akai mpc 2500.
How about a feature similar to the 16 level tuning on the MPC that would also STRETCH the sample to the master tempo with zero artifacting ” No Chipmunk effect” pitch shifting this would make things so much easier for HIP HOP producers !!!
I would also Like to be able to categorize and separate my folders for plug ins so I wont have to search through my full list each time.
I would like to be able to be able to put group tracts inside group tracks.
Sound engine improvements
Stability Improvements
History buffer function that saves every 10 minutes for total recall of any sessions past state.
1. Dual monitors support is my first wish (VERY COOL)
2. 64 bit
3. “audio from” routing inside chains of the audio rack (COOL)
4. “midi from” routing inside chains of midi rack and instrument rack (COOL)
4. +1 for “timestretching features” inside pads of the Drum Rack.
I HOPE THEY EXTENTED RECORD TO QUANTIZE ALL THE WAY TO 1/16T 1/32 MPC STYLE
you can already go down much further than that :)
Notation please.
I would love some notation. I write out a lot of instrumentals in kontakt and am forced to use a separate notation program to give it to the session musicians. such a hassle
I would love to automation curves…I really like Ableton but it is not possible to have a nice gentle curve on automation..dual monitor support also would be superb..get this right and i’m sure many people will move over to Live as it is truly an amazing DAW..
1. 64 Bit Support
2. Dual Monitor Support
3. “Hide Tracks” function
4. Offline FX, like Dc offset removal, Normalize, etc..
5. Better Video Support (Not only Quicktime .mov!)
Triple monitor with one with personnal vsti + vst stack (snaping on edge, remember position for each track, etc..)
Personnaly i would even add the current selected clip piano roll underneath so that editing notes can be in two place at the same time depending on the choice of the user..
ability to alternate views to the main monitor with the arrangment view to the session view and and vst view with easy shortcut like shift-something-left-right arrow
You could even replace the vsti big control in ableton live instrument chain with a simpler bar that when you click it just select it in the left screen.
Anyway you understand the idea is to give personnalize layout with fast management.
You could even remember the placement of the vsti and vst instruments base on most used layout from a certain vsti + certains vsts.. :)
You can change between Session view and Arrangement view with the Tab button…
Soy DJ me gustaria poder warping video amarrados con auido para poder mezclarlos en vivo seria algo genial
ITS HERE!
http://www.ableton.com/live-9-preview.php
Almost got me, but Ableton is obviously too cool to use php
~~~Dual Monitor Support(one arrange one session)
notation please!!!
real time export.
Normalize function!
1. 64 Bit Support
2. Dual Monitor Support
1. 64 Bit Support
2. Dual Monitor Support
PLEASE !!!!!! !! 64 bits
ableton live 9 will be 64 bit. thats for sure. that is not a plus, is just a necessity. nobody would buy it otherwise. but, the only thing that will make me buy a new version would be multitouch montor support!
Floating/Dockable windows
Better Piano Roll
small one;
improve automation curve capabilities (link to LFO, other parameters etc)
Better automation curve!!! Look at Logic and copy theirs!
look up the live manual… youll find those curves ur looking for :)
new interfaces like in presonus studio one. more colors! more instruments! new look for blocks and boxes! integration with soundcloud! new simple audio warping engine! and its more important: litgher for the CPU engine!!!! yeah:P!
Ghost clips (linked)
a step sequencer for drum tracks…….and insert a drum track……
1.beat sequencer,2.better audio engine,3better cue for dj,4.cue point auto start system,better piano roll and pitch control in real time,5.better warp control engine,6.2 panel in 1 window:)BPM Reader Auto,Better REMIX functions for dj,all x64 bit open vst vsti vsti3 plugin and x64 for windows 7 and mac osx system worked.
More function for ascetic gui panel -any more skins for AL9
The ability to record automation into clips would be great.
envelopes?
- serious mixer
- pattern sequencer (drum rack)
- multitrack VERTICAL ZOOM!!!!
- A typicall situation: I have a track with a chain of a vst synth whit some effects, like a chorus, beat repeater… and, at the end, a delay or reberv. Ok, now I want to freeze this track to save some CPU resources: One way to do that is to create a group track from this track, move the delay and reberv to the group track and keep frozen the rest (if you make music you know why). Still, you have control over the lasts effects of the chain. There are a lot of situations where is usefully to use group tracks or “auxiliary tracks” to route MIDI or audio.
The problem is that by this way you have to spend a “number track” needlessly. I mind, a chanel of the control surface. It cold be nice to have the posibility of “deactivate” tracks (tracks “without numbers”).
- There are a lot of VST MIDI and audio plugins that returns MIDI (like arpegiators, midi utilities to convert MIDI CC or drum replacers, for example). Why not it is possible in Live? (another case of auxiliary tracks).
- I Know it’s difficult, but why not combine MIDI and audio tracks in the same track?. So you can use frozen and unfrozen clips at the same track.
- Independent Freeze for any scene of the drum rack, for save CPU or use external (and finite) synths and fx’s. A lot of musicians synthesize their own sounds, embedding synths and effects in the drumrack. Once you have the sound you rarely changes or automate, but it’s good to keep the original if you need to do it. Actual solution: Duplicate the scene (midi notes of all the clips) and freeze & “flat” the sound (to much “automated work”).
…more “improvements”:
- The posibility to combine two midi clips dragging one above the other?
- why can’t work the drumrack like a group track, with differents clips for any chain? It cold be nice to experiment with differents drum patterns to have something like “global clips” and also independent clips for the chains.
- Record and edit #CC (for external synths) in the same way that automations? It’s tedious and unintuitive to do it into the clip step by step.
- SysEx? (rpn & nrpn)?
- Or an environment to work whit external equipment (like logic or cubase)?
Ok, I know Live’s philosophy is not logic or cubase’s philosophy, but in my opinion whit some of this this improvements could be the perfect daw for everyone, not only dj’s. Anyway, I love the simplicity of Live.
(sorry for my poor english)
Please add to the list:
Actual Mp3 ID3 tag support on PC. The workarounds don’t cut it.
Midi internal routing so I can make the gate operate by a CV like olden times.
Of course 64 bit and multi monitor are expected.
Multi Touch support would be wonderful for my pad, but not necessary yet.
Build a Giant Library of Sounds for inclusion with the Standard Addition.
DO NOT rely on MAX for new plugin’s exclusively, some of us don’t ever intend on buying it.
Export to MP3, pay them MIT boys a little something and let’s get this on.
Accept FLAC and OGG files. They are open format. Just do it!
Surround mixing without a ridiculous setup involved.
If you know the driver latency why not auto adjust the compensation? Most people don’t even know how to set that so help them out.
Quick video tutorials on the Basics would seriously help the cause, you tube is great but the info is sometimes questionable. Video is easy and informative.
The Browser could use a lot of help.
Groups of Groups would be helpful. Just for keeping things sorted.
A beer holder. American cars have them, why don’t European DAW’s have them?
Midi randomizer for off the cuff random midi generation that is saved on the scroll.
Notation, for the 2 cello players that use this program.
Auto History feature: Think photoshop’s history. (Makes it easier to compare changes.)
Reliabilty on PC’s. Does it exist? Can it happen?
Ok that is just the off the top of the head list.
Either way thanks for a game changing program, seriously when you released 8 over 7 I had to change everything I had to learn a new game. lol
Nate
the ability to zoom vertically in the arrangement view would be very helpful and the lack of seems like such a silly oversight……
also copy paste of samples from 1 impulse slot to another as well as the ability to midi map the impulse slots directly to pads on a controller without the need for long round about drawnout midi programming…
ableton is so ahead in so many ways and i love it, but there are a few places where it’s almost archaically behind….
thnx.
I wish that ableton improves the midi communication with the external instruments.
I have a moog slim phatty wich sounds perfectly fine when i play with my midi controller, but when i program the notes and the automation in the piano roll, it never works properly and i always have clicks and cracks as soon as a note finishes.
Also, when i program the midi notes and send to my access virus rack XL, most of the time it behaves like if i were messing up the volume’s envelope (attack and release).
It’s really frustrating because it’s my only daw software, i won’t spend money with another one, i really love it and unfortunatellyi can’t record my instruments properly.
hm….i have also a little phatty with keyboard and it works fine….
OSC Support !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Convolution Reverb Plug-In Impulse responses like revolverb
Dual monitors support wld be an great adv.
Also more accuracy in the effects and i dunno if some of you gt same porblem but when we group tracks i can hear some little glitches. kinda crackles. Solving this issue would be nice.
Better Eq with a kind of integrated spectrum indicating peaks would be great for quick mixing while composing.
The piano roll of Fruity is one example of a good one. It can be usefull for a newbie in the chords display. The scale and chords of ableton are good but it didn’t show you the notes on the piano roll. SO making those things work together could be nice.
Better Master Meter would also be great with an Rms Loudness display ..
And th ability for the audio channel to “do not” affect audio you drop in. I dunno if some of you gt same this but when i drop a kick in the audio channel it seems like the kick lost his punch. Even when velocity is 100 “i presume it means 100% of its capicity” the audio seems compressed.
Thanks for all..
customizable dual monitor suport + mixer zoom
dual monitor support with session view, it’s useful
Customisable interface for a better feel with of corse multitouch screen compatibility, whithout, i just stay in the 8 craked suite… ;)
Video output and integration with Serato Video SL…
I would like ableton to be an add on from live 8. I have spent alot of money getting it and to spend a further 4-500 quid would be a bit heartbreaking as well as wallet breaking.
I will wait and see how the reviews look and wait for somebody else to test it out :)
IN-JOI Fellow users
Dual monitor workaround…. I copied the Live.app (*THIS IS ON MY MAC) and created a DUAL LIVE setup.
Open your set on two different applications. Has anyone else tried this?
Then, using two monitors, route MIDI commands from one to the other and back and forth.
It seems to work, but is pretty lame, considering all of the manual mapping from virtual midi ports that are needed to accomplish this.
64bit :-D
If a 64 bit version is not out very soon I will change daws and not look back to ableton
Please have a new fancier or better looking box cover design for Ableton Live 9 but manage to keep the logo the same. I feel its time for a new box design look.
he? does the look of the box improve your work???
auto name tracks would be nice on import would save time
Also please devise a new way where you can only activate your live 9 only one time. This time like having your own registration key handy. Imagine if a person replaces his or her hard drive with a new one, you don’t need to go online to reinstall your program as long as you have your registration key handy. Imagine if you loose your registration key you can always look it up in your ableton account. I
don’t think we have that in live 8 but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
waveform on every track in session view?
and master efect for tuning monitors
please make it bit like logic
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I think that it will be at least early part of 2012 before we even see beta testing for Live 9.
Then it’s going to (hopefully) be a while in beta. I’m thinking Live 9 for sale late summer of next year so they can get it on the shelves for Christmas of 2012.
Even then people are going to wait to upgrade to see how things are working. Ableton taught the lesson well that you should always stay at least one upgrade behind.
things to hope for
64 bit
max built in
After that it really does not matter as long as it’s stable
64 bits for sure! Live 9 + Reason 6 = BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM !!!
4 screens !!! XD
cool,iam waiting anxiously for it,and please for changes or improvement just make it a litle bit like logic audio thanx
- Numerical peak level display as in Logic
- Bounce (mixdown) to a new track (not resampling, I mean a mono waveform mixdown) of either all the project or just the desired track(s).
Too lazy to export a single track and then re-import it back.
Please, give an special attention for the interface look.
The workflow is fantastic like no other… but the visual skin is overpast.
FL Studio 10, Logic, Pro Tools 10, Studio One… all them have a beautiful UI.
Please Ableton, follow their examples.
no pleaseeee…. i love the ableton design, its way better than fl studio and all the other programs
I have to agree, the interface is starting to look a bit dated. Although Ableton are currently against doing this, I think making the Windows and Mac versions more ‘native’ would do a lot for each user interface.
The downside of course is that the interface on each platform would differ slightly.
Please give us the simple possibility to curve the automations between two points
i want a new mixer…
ALL OF THE ABOVE.
-Bottom Line-
Ableton hates their customers. this is known
I think its apparent from above comments that a lot of their customers are idiots.
Would love to see these features…
1. *Piano/Midi roll (serious makeover) and editing improvements*
2. 64 bit support
3. Dual monitor support
5. Video playback and mixing
6. Browser and session automation
7. Notation
64 bit support! I use ableton for scoring movies and need more than 4 gb ram for my sets. I really love your software and ready to fight for it with another daw’s users but if i won’t have ability to use more than 4 gb – it will be very dissapointing and make my work impossible.
Would love to be able to do things like snare roll especially as im coming from an fl studio background, i got ableton about a month ago and my GOD im freaking loving it
I wish synths and effects had nicer interface. Something like VST synths so I can quickly distinguish them from eachother. Nice and colorful. Like in Reason for example. They don’t need to look necessarily photorealistic, but just eye catching.
flash and color is logic, reason, FL. Crowded, confusing and CPU intensive. Live’s 2D environment is all pros IMO. Simple knobs, simples interface, yet as capable as any synth. :)
Using Automation in clips on the fly
Recordig Automation in clips on the fly
Recording automation in clips on the fly
Max 4 Live Runtime / M4L Included For Free
Proper DJ style looping and multiwaveforms view
Proper sample & track management
Propper Pitchbending PLZ!!!!!!!!!
Pitchbending on fl. 4 was even better! they urgently need to emprove this.
network jamming, and internet jamming ( working on the same project on 2 computers simultanously)
this is what i wish for a new ableton version!
HUGE FEATURE:
1 Easy Piano Roll for a Group of instruments, with color coded notes in the roll.
- ie. group ANY instruments together, have a piano roll on the Group where you can specify each note’s instrument thru right click menu or side panel. This would be AWESOME for writing glitch style basslines and leads where you have 3-5 or more different instruments playing 1 melody, currently it’s such a tedious production process and is becoming one of the most popular styles of electronic (justice, skrillex, deadmau5, dirty___, mord fustang, wolfgang gartner, glitch mob, all popular dubstep, etc).
currently instrument racks don’t give you multiple instruments, and drum racks with multiple instruments don’t give you a piano roll with the ability to change note, each note line is only an instrument sound on one note without notes grid forcing you to work with multiple piano rolls and instrument channels.
Make it happennnnnnnnnnnnn! :-D
hope they got mature about grouping issues ;)
Bitwig Studio
PLEASE PLEASE make it so you can have the launch quantization different for each track!! like if i want my drums to launch every 4 bars but my samples to launch of 1/16! please god that would be so amazing!
THIS.
+ different launch qunatization for different scenes.
Definitely agree with the splice/automation curves, would make transitions a hell of a lot more natural.
Grouping groups is another good one as it would tidy up the work space making all assets far easier to see and therefore more efficient.
Stability has also been a problem especially when a lot of CPU heavy plugins are running, i tend to crash. This could also open the opportunity for an auto-save type of thing, obviously to feel secure.
I would like, rather than need, a customizable work space across dual monitors. I like the thought of a bespoke design as I can have open everything i need, where i need it (with the dual monitors opening up a lot more space to do this in).
64bit
Interval or programmable min and max settings for all midi mappable controls. i hope I said that right. I know you can set some of them but not all by any means.
64 bit support, stability&CPU efficiency improvements, fixing the automation thing not syncing properly with the mixer latency are THE MUST.
Possibility to edit the piano-rolls for different synths in the same window would be a great thing.
Dual monitor support, overall GUI redesign would be nice but not so necessary.
New synth? Current Suite stock synths are just mediocre. I doubt the new one would compare to Zebra or Sylenth. Who needs one more crappy synth imparting additional cost to the full package?
You all want to much… ;)
i only need the 64bit…
and of course a better Sound engine.
People who worked with cubase , logic or other know the difference.
and at the end, think about the world.. we need Nature !..
not all that machines and electronic stuff..
cheers.
-a better build-in eq that is more precise and doesnt change the sound if dialed linear…
- multi-screen support (+ customizable view (a bit like cubase or so))
- a better structured midi/piano roll
- beeing able to type in values when automating the envelope curve in an arrangement
- beeing able to automate more values like waveshape etc….
- more dynamic processors, like real expander, ducker, gate with more controls …
- (64 Bit float + bouncing options)
- more midi settings like being able to set modifier (something like the shift key on a computer keyboard) in a more intuitive way…
all in all i love ableton live anyway. but changing some of those things would be great! sometimes those restrictions really bother me because then you have to find some really strange solutions in order to do what you want. and it never is exactly what you want it to be…
Automated switch from scene to scene WITH the ability to override global bar length settings for such an event.
i would love to have something from ableton working also on an ipad…to sketch things on the run….something like a mini ableton live 9 for the ipad…..
and a natibe integration of touchable.
or what would be mindblowing…to have just the plugs i have in live on my i pad to controll it with the fingers and not with the mouse….
Please improve piano roll, copy some features from cubase piano roll, he have grate features :)
Please make piano roll better.
what in my opinion would improve the Drum Rack could be the “single shot” on note on, this in order to defeat those gate effects on cymbals, also the possibility to note off a hihat when another hh is in note on…
pretty pleaseeeeee!!!!!!
Hey how about lowering the stupid price tag,its 2012 who can afford 4oo,euro and still have to pay for max,can see ableton having financial problems soon,logic pro is 129 euro(and a hell of a lot better if you dont need to play live)
come on now greedy ones
dont destroy yourselves
I think it would be awesome to see a few things:
-A new more accessible piano roll for composing ease
-The ability to save automation clips
-The ability to add “curved” nodes in automation lines
-The ability to stretch and shrink audio clips in increments other than double or half
-It would be nice to see some sort of automatic track organizer. When I get to a certain point in all of my tracks, I find myself breaking down the sections and consolidating clips about every 4, 8 or 16 measures, renaming them, color coding them, and dragging them into the session view. It would kick ass if there was a customize able dialogue that did this for me.
Lastly
-A “new project” dialogue that allows the user to choose a starting template from a list of defaults as well as any custom ones they set up.
If Live 9 has these features and more included in them, I will jizz my pants on the spot, and shortly thereafter, run around in circles ass naked with tears of joy streaming down my face….
I will BUY Ableton 9 =)
Option to update altered clips in session view to an existing arrangement. I was rather surprised to learn this is not possible yet so currently altering a clip in session does not reflect in an existing arrangement; I think this is a huge shortcoming.
The ability to record parameter automation into clips in session view. I know you can do it in Arrangement view but it would be great to be able to twist the knobs on the plugins & record into the clip. Also to be able to send Macros to external Hardware. You just don’t get the same feel when you draw envelopes into a clip. I have managed to get around this by sending IAC driver into Ableton but what you gain on the swings, you lose on the roundabouts.
I would also like to see improvement of the effects. They just don’t compare to Logic.
I almost forgot. Please make it 64 bit.
I recently switched back to Logic, purely so that i can run it in 64 bit mode. I also would like it if people like myself who have supported you over the years should be able to get a discount or at least be able to upgrade.
A SCORE EDITOR THAT WORKED SEAMLESSLY WHILE THE AUDIO IS RUNNING WOULD BE MOST DESIRABLE!
Being able to TAB to TRANSIENTS for tighter edits. Zooming in takes too long. Or maybe I just don’t know how to do it.
Dual Monitor support
64 bit
Export MP3
Just add dual monitor support couldn’t give a monkeys
about any thing else but this is a deal breaker for
me if they don’t add this im moving to another daw
Just add dual monitor support that’s all it needs. don’t care about
a new synth, effects i have all the ones i need thanks
two monitors support , one for session view and the other for arrange view
